RCHS Track and Field Team Philosophy
We believe that high school sports can and should be a very prominent part of the mental, physical, and social growth process for high school students. We know that high school sports can contribute greatly to the values and ethics of each athlete, that positive experiences teach important life skills, encourages teamwork, helps shape character and citizenship, and encourages a healthy life style. The student/athlete who recognizes the essential nature of teamwork, communication, and commitment, will benefit greatly from his/her Jags Track and Field experience.

Rock Canyon Track and Field Team Standards
I. Attendance at Practices and Meets
- Athletes are required to be at all meets and practices
- Excessive unexcused absences from practices/meets will result in removal from the team. (1st unexcused -warning, 2nd unexcused -suspended 1 meet, 3rd unexcused-removed from team) Examples of unexcused absences, work, family vacations, test prep classes).
- Excused absences are: DR/Dentist appointments, home sick from school (no need to contact coaches), family emergency, SAT/ACT Tests and College Visits (Juniors/Seniors only)
- Excused absences MUST be communicated to Coach Davies prior to the absence (unless you are out of school due to illness) TEXT is best way to communicate these: 720-308-4123.
- Showing up late for practices/meets or leaving early, is the same as unexcused absences. (unless prior arrangements have been made with Coach Davies)
For the 2024 season All athletes will need to provide their own transportation to and from meets.
- All athletes are expected to wear RCHS team apparel to all meets. All athletes will be issued a Team Singlet. Athletes will need to purchase solid black competition shorts. Athletes will need to provide their own warm-ups. They can be purchased from our RCHS Track and Field web-store (opening in Feb), or we have Track warm-ups form previous years for sale (10.00), or any RCHS Jag apparel from anther sport is ok.
- When athletes are not competing they need to be in the team camp. There are times when athletes get injured and coaches need to find a substitute ASAP.
- The following items are not allowed at meets: Footballs, Frisbees, HackySacks, etc.
- Sportsmanship: Remember " When you lose, say little, when you win, say less." You represent RCHS and displaying the highest level of sportsmanships is expected.
- Event Selection - The RCHS Track and Field Coaching Staff makes the "Final Decision" on which events athletes compete in. These decisions first and foremost, are based on how every athlete can best contribute to the overall success of the team. Athletes who pull out of an event without prior approval from a coach, or refuse to compete, will be suspended for the next meet. The second occurrence will result in removal from the RCHS Track and Field team.
- Outside Competition - Athletes are not allowed to compete in outside meets during the CHSSA Official Season unless prior approval has been given by the Head Coach and School Principal. Approval will be only for a National Level High School Meet in which the athlete has met a National qualifying standard.
We do our best to make sure athletes avoid injuries, however injuries still take place. Below is the policy that all athletes must follow:
- When you are injured, you must still attend practice and then you will be sent to the trainer for rehab.
- Your Coach will refer you to our RCHS Training Staff who will make a diagnosis and follow up with the Head Coach. (athletes do not decided whether they are injured, our RCHS Training staff will make that diagnosis and will determine if they can practice or compete per district policy).
- You are still required to attend all meets if you are injured so you can support your teammates.
- Once an athlete is "100% medically" cleared for practice, they will follow training/competition policies of the RCHS coaching staff.
- Athletes must be able to complete a full week of "injury free" training in order to be allowed to compete in that week's meet.
- We need you to be positive and encouraging at meets. We also need your help in making sure your athlete is doing the right things at home, eating well, getting enough sleep, and balancing their schedule, so they are ready both physically and mentally to practice and compete!
- If your athlete isn’t performing as you would expect, please talk to a coach when they are available. FYI - your athlete must be present during that conversation. Our coaches are more than willing to hear from you, however please refrain fro doing so while we are coaching.
- Please stay off the infield. All of the meets that we will compete in restrict infield access to only athletes and coaches.
- Please avoid coaching your athlete before and during competitions. That includes race strategy, running technique, and field event technique. If you have questions on any of those items, please talk to the event coach.
- Following competing in an event, give your athlete time to recover and talk to a coach before talking to them yourself. Please give athletes space while they are in the team camp. This where they need to relax and focus and where conversations with coaches take place.
- In longer events (high/long/triple jump, pole vault, and throws), their event starts with the first try and ends with the last. In between, which may be an hour or more, they are still considered “competing”, and you should not be talking or texting with them. Talking to them between jumps/throws, during warm-ups and warming down, would be like walking into the dugout during a softball/baseball game and speaking with them.
- We all want our athletes to succeed. When athletes, parents, and coaches work together, the more successful our Jags will be!
- Academic eligibility is done weekly. Any athlete ineligible per CHSSA rules (Must pass 5 classes minimum), will not be allowed to practice until they become eligible.
- Weather conditions can be quite extreme during the Spring. If there is lightning or extreme snow, the trainer and coaching will decide if it is safe to practice outside. If not, we will practice indoors. Unless school is cancelled, WE WILL ALWAYS HOLD PRACTICE!!
